DO's
- DO pump your septic tank as needed (Every 2-3 years for year round residents. Event 4-5 years for seasonal homes).
- DO keep a written record so you know when the last time your septic system was serviced. All Central Jersey Septic clients receive a free Homeowners Guide to Septic Systems to keep record.
- DO compost food garbage or put it in the trash
- DO divert excess water like roof drains and surface water away from your system
- DO conserve water. Install water saving devices such as front loading washers, low-flow faucets/shower heads and wash clothes and dishes only when you have a full load
- Do spread out your laundry loads to even out water use
DON'TS
- DON'T use a garage disposal. This adds 50 % more solids to your septic system
- DON'T over use 2x plus concentrated laundry detergents.
- DON'T pour automotive oil, cooking oil or grease down the drain.
- DON'T use too much water, especially during rainy seasons where the ground is already saturated.
- DON'T use chemical or biological septic cleaners which can plug up your leach fields and ruin your septic system.
- DON'T flush feminine hygiene products, cat litter, disposable diapers, or other non-biodegradable products in to your system.
