Refresher Course: The Do's and Don'ts of Septic System Care

Every once in a while it is good to review some of the things we overlook in life to ensure...the health of your septic system. That's right, your septic system! This very important component of your home is a part of the investment in your home and proper care of it can mean extending its lifetime which translates in to money saved. Follow these simple rules to maintain a health septic system:

DO's
  • DO pump your septic tank as needed (Every 2-3 years for year round residents. Event 4-5 years for seasonal homes).
  • DO keep a written record so you know when the last time your septic system was serviced. All Central Jersey Septic clients receive a free Homeowners Guide to Septic Systems to keep record.
  • DO compost food garbage or put it in the trash
  • DO divert excess water like roof drains and surface water away from your system
  • DO conserve water. Install water saving devices such as front loading washers, low-flow faucets/shower heads and wash clothes and dishes only when you have a full load
  • Do spread out your laundry loads to even out water use
With every DO, there is a DON'T some of these may seem insignificant upon first glance but considering the negative affect they can have on your septic system, you should pay it some mind:

DON'TS
  • DON'T use a garage disposal. This adds 50 % more solids to your septic system
  • DON'T over use 2x plus concentrated laundry detergents.
  • DON'T pour automotive oil, cooking oil or grease down the drain.
  • DON'T use too much water, especially during rainy seasons where the ground is already saturated.
  • DON'T use chemical or biological septic cleaners which can plug up your leach fields and ruin your septic system.
  • DON'T flush feminine hygiene products, cat litter, disposable diapers, or other non-biodegradable products in to your system.
If you follow these simple do's and don'ts you will help maintain your septic system investment for years to come. Central Jersey Septic can provide a full line of septic system services including pumping / maintenance, inspections, repairs and installations / replacements. With over 40 years of knowledge, experienced technicians, and a reputation for superior customer satisfaction, Central Jersey Septic is ready to handle your septic related services when the time comes.

New Rules & Regulations for Septic Systems in NJ

As a homeowner, there are many aspects of your home that you need to worry about to ensure your investment is protected. However, there is one component of your home that must be properly maintained to protect something other than your investment...the environment. Your septic system, one of the most overlooked pieces of your home, is now coming under more scrutiny. New rules and regulations contain requirements for the proper design, construction, and operation of systems to protect public health and the environment. This program is coordinated with, and implemented though, the local health departments. The program is committed to improving New Jersey’s water quality and protecting human health and the environment and both improving and promoting local septic management.
